Because It Feels Good
Growing generosity
It’s been an unexpected and wonderful week full of generous, encouraging, and supportive friends and strangers who have changed more than one person’s life in the past few days.
On May 3rd, I updated my status on Facebook about the $300 Tiger Drive Scholarship:
Within 24 hours of this post, someone contacted Carson City High School and anonymously matched the scholarship. By the next morning, another anonymous donor called the school.
I was blown away. There had been no prompting or fundraising. These kind-BIG-hearted people simply made a decision and acted on it. I have no idea who they are, but I’ll never forget them because they created momentum. Within hours of this great news, a very good friend* called me and said, “You know what community means to me…I’m adding $900.” Inside, I felt like this guy:
For the first time since I wrote, “How To Pay A Debt Forward With Gratitude,” about the inspiration behind the scholarship, we realized that we could now offer a more impactful award to one applicant and choose a second applicant for the original amount of $300! Or so we thought…
The Tiger Drive Scholarship has grown $300 to almost $2,300! Two students will be supported in a big way. As the very helpful CHS counselor, Ms. Chambers, said, “Generosity really is contagious.”
Someone asked me if I will offer the scholarship next year.
Answer: ABSOLUTELY.
They asked, “Why?”
Answer: Because it feels good to participate in the greater good.
I think this is the reason so many people have supported the scholarship with their money, time, or words of encouragement: they want to actively participate in positive change.
On May 19th, Carson City Highschool will host a Senior Scholarship Night and recognize our recipients and afterward, I look forward to telling you more about the recipients of the Tiger Drive Scholarship. One has already said, “In the future I would like to fund a scholarship similar to this one.”
As always, thanks for being you.
